North Carolina’s budget should reflect the priorities of the people – but right now, it doesn’t.
Instead of investing in health care, housing, education, and workers, a handful of legislative leaders are holding our state budget hostage to push for billions in tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit wealthy elites and profitable corporations.
Finalizing the state budget is being blocked because Senate leaders are pushing for a $9 billion income tax cut that primarily benefits the wealthiest North Carolinians. The House has proposed a different approach – one that protects revenue as the cost of vital services continues to rise.
But while politicians stall and we go without a state budget, North Carolinians are paying the price:
- Health care providers who serve patients with Medicaid are facing cuts.
- Child care centers and family homes are closing at alarming rates.
- Children returned to school without adequate funds to fulfill the state Constitution’s commitment to a sound, basic education and
- There is no plan for minimizing the harm of federal cuts to food assistance, health care and more.
Meanwhile, corporations will pay ZERO in state income taxes in North Carolina by 2030 — draining more than $2 billion annually from the public services and infrastructure we all rely on.
North Carolina thrives when we invest in people – not when we hand out tax breaks to those who already have the most.
It’s time for the General Assembly to Love NC, Fund NC. That means putting the people of NC first and keeping the corporate income tax rate at a minimum of 2.5 percent.
All signatures collected will be presented to North Carolina state lawmakers with a demand they file, sponsor, and/or vote yes to keep the state corporate income tax at a rate of 2.5 percent.
